Continued School Closures

This is certainly a challenging and rapidly changing time for our families, students, and staff. I hope you are all maintaining good health, both mentally and physically. I was pleased to connect with most of you on the phone and to hear how everyone is doing.

Premier Doug Ford announced today that Ontario school closures will continue until at least May 4. The intent is to keep all students engaged in distance learning during this time. I'll provide further information as I learn more.

In the meantime, continue to work through some of the suggestions given in the previous posts. Also, daily chores can become a wonderful teachable moment! Now is the time to work together to fold laundry, dust, and vacuum. Cooking or baking in the kitchen practices many mathematical skills as well as having the opportunity to investigate a variety of science concepts (Have your child think back to our Liquids and Solids unit. What happens when oil and water are put together? How about flour and salt?). Try an experiment that shows a "reaction" with vinegar and baking soda.

Assignments

The following activities are suggested for home learning:

Reading: Read/re-read Snuggle Up and Read books taken home on the last day of school. Use the Greenleaf Learning Commons link to find other reading materials. Discuss: characters/setting/problem/solution.  Retell the beginning, middle, and end. Non-fiction? Discuss learned facts.

Writing: Keep a writing journal. We have been working on writing a paragraph (hamburger writing). This includes a topic sentence, detail sentences (4 to 5), and a conclusion. Be sure to include capitals, punctuation, spaces between words, and adjectives (descriptive words).

Math: In math we were beginning to wrap up our 3D solids unit by creating 3D models. Use straws/popsicle sticks and tape or paper to create a cube, rectangular prism, or pyramid. Count the faces, edges, and vertices. What 2D shapes do you see? Also, take time to review counting coins to $1.00. Practise adding and subtracting math facts to 18 for speed and accuracy.

Please let your child know that I am thinking of them each and every day. Remind them that our classroom rule of always being kind continues at home with parents, siblings, and pets.

Home Learning

Hello Families,

I am not even sure how to begin this post other than to simply send my sincerest hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. I do so miss all of my students and our regular routines of class 2B. I'm thinking of all of you in this difficult time and wishing you all the best.

The Ministry of Education has currently provided the self directed "Learn at Home" resource with grade specific activities.

In addition, please see the link below for you to access a digital library from the Greenleaf Learning Commons. There are many wonderful titles available for students to checkout 24/7.

The Ministry of Education and the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board continue to plan for what the longer term might look like for continued learning.

Please check this blog periodically for updates.
