Know Your Globe/ STEM Activity

Take a closer look at a globe. A globe is a model of the whole Earth. Watch the video link below:

Know Your Globe

Look at the "Continents of the World" map provided above. Find all 7 continents. Locate the oceans. How many oceans are shown here? In the year 2000, a fifth ocean was named. The Southern Ocean completely surrounds Antarctica. Find on a globe or this map where the Southern Ocean is located.

Science & Engineering for Kids: Paper Building Blocks

Most paper crafts revolve around creating something fancy out of paper, but did you know that you could use paper as a structural material? Simple paper building blocks are a great way to demonstrate engineering for kids. Take a material that is weak in and of itself, fold it into a robust shape, like a triangle, and viola, you are now building with paper! Try cutting strips of paper and folding them into triangles. Tape each triangle closed. Now you can build!!

Mrs. Wickson's Message

Yahoo! I was able to successfully post my short video message to the students on the Activity Feed in the Hub. Click on the Course Home icon at the top of our course page. The Activity Feed is located on the top left. Students and parents can comment underneath the post if they wish. Have a wonderful weekend!

Dream Home

Here is a writing prompt for today:

If you could build a perfect house, what would it look like? What would you put in it? Draw your dream house. Try making a "floor plan" of one level in your house. Use the example below to get you started.

Stay tuned... I have created a video message to share with my students. The file is too large to be placed on the Blog. Please watch the Activity Feed in the Hub or your email later today. I do hope I can figure out how to send it!

Phys. Ed. Lesson from Mrs. Little/ April 20-24

Hi my Grade 2 friends!

This is the AVENGERS FITNESS CHALLENGE! This will take you about 7 mins to complete. However, it will probably take you a total of 15 mins! You will have to watch the example and then try the exercise to make sure you know how to do the exercise properly. Then you can complete the 38 sec exercise. Once the music stops you stop and rest for 10 secs.

There are 3 choices of exercises for each Avenger. Each day you will pick a new exercise to try. I am suggesting that you stick with the same arrow choice for each day.

Remember you are only doing 1 exercise for each Avenger per day! You should be only completing 7 exercises per day. But as many as you can do in the 38 seconds. Rest when you don’t hear any music. Watch the video and you should be able to follow the expectations. Follow the Success Criteria below. Here is the link to the video and I hope you will try your best!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqZFz44AB78

Success Criteria
Day 1
- learning and picking the different exercises in the video
-completing ONE (1) exercise per Avenger (7 exercises total)
-Do what you can and at your own pace and/or level. You can always stop the video and restart from where you want. Take your time.

Day 2
-learning and picking a new AND different exercise in the video
-completing a new but only ONE (1) exercise per Avenger (7 new exercises total)
Day 3
-learning and picking the last and different exercise in the video
-completing a new and last exercise per Avenger to the best that you can (7 new exercises in total)

OPTIONAL
Day 4
-For those who want a really good work out, complete the video like you did for Day 1, then restart the video and complete the exercises for Day 2 and then restart the video and finish up with the exercises for Day 3! Approximately a 21 minute workout! (7 x 3 =21 exercises in one day!)

Additional follow-up
If you would like you can send a comment (something you liked or didn't like about the video) and/or a picture of you doing the workout to your teacher.

Have fun and stay active! Mrs. Little

STEM Activities Link

The following link offers video chat classes for STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). I've included one of the S.T.E.M. challenges below as an extra activity that might interest your child.              STEM Activities for Kids: How strong is a piece of paper
Link: http://creeksidelearn ing.com/stem-activiti es-for-kids-how-stro ng-is-a-piece-of-pape r/
We are going to test the strength of paper, folded in differently shaped columns, by piling books on top. This is very similar to how columns are used to support buildings and other structures.
Triangle, square and circle. Which paper is the strongest?
The Science Behind It
The cylinder can support the most books because it’s walls don’t have any edges. The force of the books cannot become concentrated in a particular area. The load is distributed evenly. In other words, all parts of the cylinder are sharing the load of the books. All parts of the cylinder, therefore, contribute to it’s overall strength until, finally, it collapses.
The square and triangle deform more easily. They shift the weight of the books to their edges and corners, which deforms their walls and leads to a quick collapse. They are unable to carry weight only at their edges.
Have you noticed columns in buildings and other structures , like parking garages? What shape are the columns?
Are they on the inside of the building/structure to serve their practical purpose of supporting beams or arches? Or are they exterior columns which lend support but also beauty to the structure?
Early architects in several ancient civilizations used columns in architecture including the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and Romans.
Challenge Instructions
● Use regular copy paper, not card stock for this challenge.
● Fold each paper into the three shapes and secure with tape.

● Slowly pile books on top of each shape.
